Recently I met a general contractor in the Phoenix area, he asked me to help him with doors.

The contractor and I met, he told me he is doing a total renovation to a house that had a bad water flood damage.

In the house there is an opening of eight feet wide by eight feet tall (floor to ceiling).
He said he is going to reduce the height to seven feet and asked me to come up with a plan for
Installing four French doors. The opening is between the hallway and office room.

The idea is to install two doors that will be totally fixed on each side of the opening and two doors that will slide on a track that will be mounted above the doors. The track maker is ‘Johnson‘.

I gave the contractor the  bid a long with a plan, he liked it and asked me to order the doors.

I ordered from ‘Masonite‘ four 24 inches wide doors with factory white primer. The doors came with plastic film, covering the glass panes for protection.

I bought lumber to create the jamb (The frame around the doors).
I screwed the frame to the two fixed doors and I installed this unit in the opening.
Next step I installed a high quality track and hardware and hung the two sliding doors.

The tricky part was to calculate so the sliding doors tops and the fixed doors are at the same height so all the lines are lining up perfectly. I had to take off the sliding doors about two and half inches from the bottom to accommodate for the track, hardware and the floor guide.

Then I installed a wood valance on each side to hide the track.
Another tricky part was installing the floor guides to keep the doors from swinging..

With a router I made a grove at the bottom of the sliding doors.

Under the doors I installed an upside down a T shape (about three inch long) a floor guide into the floor.

The doors must meet each other at the center perfectly when they are closed and must overlap the two fixed doors perfectly when they are wide open.

At last I drilled three quarters of an inch holes for the installation of the finger recessed pull.

The contractor is going to finish it up, meaning, remove the doors, painting and installing trim around the frame.

The review in my client’s words:

This is the second time I’ve used Dov for a door installation. This time he replaced my back door with a beautiful 10-lite Douglas Fir Dual pane exterior door, including replacing all existing trim, inside and out.
Dov is very conscientious about his work and it shows in the details. This was an extremely challenging job as my home is an old 1936 historic home complete with 80 year old challenges when it comes to updating.
Dov surpassed my expectations and not only installed the door, but installed new trim and patched up the exterior stucco. He also communicated thoroughly throughout the entire process, from our consultation and help ordering the door through the installation, calling, texting, and sending pictures of the progress. We are very pleased and will be using him for future projects!

Replacing back Dutch door with ten light French door.

My client who lives in the historic district of Phoenix found my business on Angie’s List, he asked me to replace his back door.
His Dutch door (The door is split in half so you can open only the half upper section or the the whole door.) The Dutch door was an out swing.
My client wanted a new French door to swing open into the house, that way he can add a screen door.
I had to replace the jamb and the trim as well.
The house was built with red bricks.

It was a bit of a challenge to attach the new door jamb to the bricks because the bricks were a bit loose. I had to re-enforce the bricks first, so the wall is solid.
I sprayed expandable polyurethane foam between the bricks,
I came back the next day and the foam was dry and the wall was very solid and ready for the new door installation.

After the installation of the door and trim, I had to repair the outside stucco.
Now the it is all ready for stain and painting of the walls around the door.

Replacing a swing door with Barn Door.

Before and after

Before and after

Replacing a swing door with Barn Door.

My new clients found me on Angie’s List

They wanted to replace the door that open into the laundry room from the hallway.
The door was taking space and getting in the way.

They wanted me to install a barn door that slides along the wall.
A pocket door was not an option because of few reasons.

They asked me to mach the new door to the old one and they wanted the new door to be solid core.

The hardware options were endless and we chose to use Johnson’s hardware and to hide it with a valance made from some kind of molding.

After removing the old door, jamb and trim, I had to reduce the opening, drywall and install radius corner beads.
The door must be wider and taller than the opening by few inches to cover the opening.
The door is thirty two inches by ninety six so I made the opening thirty inches by ninety four inches.
After I was done with the new opening, I had to remove some of the baseboard and install new baseboard.

the next step was to install a wooden header, using long lags into the wall studs.
I attached the sliding track to the header and install the door hanging from the track above.

The last step was installing the floor guide and the valance, now it’s ready for painting.

When I was done, it all looked very good as my clients said, “It looks like it was always there”.
