Replacing a swing door with Barn Door.

My new clients found me on Angie’s List

They wanted to replace the door that open into the laundry room from the hallway.
The door was taking space and getting in the way.

They wanted me to install a barn door that slides along the wall.
A pocket door was not an option because of few reasons.

They asked me to mach the new door to the old one and they wanted the new door to be solid core.

The hardware options were endless and we chose to use Johnson’s hardware and to hide it with a valance made from some kind of molding.

After removing the old door, jamb and trim, I had to reduce the opening, drywall and install radius corner beads.
The door must be wider and taller than the opening by few inches to cover the opening.
The door is thirty two inches by ninety six so I made the opening thirty inches by ninety four inches.
After I was done with the new opening, I had to remove some of the baseboard and install new baseboard.

the next step was to install a wooden header, using long lags into the wall studs.
I attached the sliding track to the header and install the door hanging from the track above.

The last step was installing the floor guide and the valance, now it’s ready for painting.

When I was done, it all looked very good as my clients said, “It looks like it was always there”.

  5. That looks great! I am glad they are happy with it! . I have been wanting to put swinging double doors going into my den area. The entrance is almost double as wide as a normal door so I thought the saloon type doors would look cute in it.

  6. I love the sliding barn door! I prefer when the hardware is visible, so I would go with the antique roller hardware
