Replacing interior doors without replacing the door jambs.

We call it ‘Matching doors on site’ to fit the existing jambs.
The door ‘slab’ as we call it come in full size, let say, 30″ by 80″
The existing door is 29″ 3/4″ by 79 1/2″
It means that I have to cut the door down in length and reduce the door width by using a power planer.

Me working hard

The door jamb is not always all that square and hung right.
There is a lot of fussing to do with each door to get the job right.

After the door size is done, I have to mark for hinges location and rout out the door edge for those hinges and bore the hole for the handle.

I look at it as getting a blank key and shaping it to match existing key but there is no magic machine to do it for me.

It’s tedious to be meticulous
If I make a mistake, I own the door if you know what I mean.

In picture you can see before and after.
The new doors are solid core, ‘Shaker’ style.
The Shaker style doors come in one, two, three, four, or five panels.
The panels are simple and square.

The Shaker style comes from the Shakers society that was established in 1774 in the US by English immigrants who believes in Christ second coming.

The Shakers followers were held as equals regardless of their sex.
They were pacifists and did not marry, they took a vow of celibacy.
The Shakers relied on adoption and conversion.
