Replacing old French doors with new ones

An Angie’s List member asked me if I could replace his double French doors in the back of his house without replacing the original jamb and trim.

The house is located in the historic district of Phoenix AZ.

Any work on those historic houses have to be approved by the city.
Installing new doors have to mach the original doors.

The original doors were installed with no weather stripping and door bottom sweeps.
Also the there was no T’ Astragal, or proper flush bolts.

Flush Bolt and T' Astragal

T’ Astragal and flush bolt

The T’ astragal is a piece of wood with a T shape profile that get attached to the edge of one door, and flush bolts are attache to it. One at the bottom and one at the top when you have double doors.
The flush bolts secure one door in place.

The new doors needed to be cut down and planed to fit just right the existing door jamb.

I installed new wood door stops along the jamb and installed Q-Lon weather striping.
I also installed door bottom sweeps, and I did some modification on the existing oak threshold.

Everything came out just right.
The home owner is going to paint the doors.

  16. These look great! I love how French Doors look, but I've always been afraid that they wouldn't seal properly & would let in too much cold or heat!
