Pocket doors are a good idea for saving space.
A pocket door consist of pocket, door and hardware.

A standard pocket AKA Ladder pocket, is contracted with wood.
You can buy a pre-assembled pocket at your local store.
The door may be any interior door.
Interior door means, 1 3/8″ thick, hollow core, solid core or even a door with glass.

The hardware is the most important part.
Most standard homes have cheap hardware and the doors often fall of the track.

Replacing the track and rollers is a bit of an operation.

Since the door is wider than the opening, the trim needs to be removed to allow the door to swing out and removed.
To remove the old track, a small piece of the dry have to be taken out to expose the back of the track’s screws.

A new track is installed after the rollers ware inserted into it.
The rollers have no place to go, they will never come out of the track.
I recommend the Johnson hardware as you see in the picture. This hardware can hold up to 200 pounds.

After the track is installed, the rollers have an adjustment, (up or down) you want the door to butt against the jamb evenly.
Now you want to install back the piece of drywall that was taken out.
Next, the trim get re-installed.
The final stage is painting.

  4. I love pocket doors! They always remind me of my buba's (grandmother's) house because they were everywhere! When we tore out my bathroom the pocket door disappeared, and yes, I saw the track (it was interesting, and Dov is right, it can't go anywhere!) and how it was built into the house. I would recommend pocket doors to anyone who could do it. They're like a secret hiding place for a door!
